Space heroes Buzz Cory and Space Cadet Happy in the television show 'Space Patrol' Space Patrol  Space Patrol originally was created for television as a daily show for children in 1950 from L.A. with a running time of 15 minutes.  This format proved popular, and after being picked up by ABC, some 900 episodes were cranked out.  The episode length then expanded to 30 minutes.  For the remaining 210 episodes this was the format length before the series ended in 1955.  Space Patrol was a popular spin off in radio, comics, and merchandise connected to the show. A cast photo of Space Patrol The show was created by Williams 'Mike' Moser who wanted to bring the excitement of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers cinema of his youth to children of the 1950's.  Production of the show was very primitive compared to modern standards.  All of the shows were performed 'live', and if there was a mistake the cast would keep going on as if they were performing a ...

The real Ziggy Stardust

Image
Ziggy Stardust which was inspired by the rise and fall of Vince Taylor   The real Ziggy Stardust David Bowie's classic album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars introduced the world to glam rock and brought the struggling musician David Bowie to the world.  This album has many classic songs which still resonate with pop culture and the youth of today, even though it was released in the early seventies.  A potent brew of songs, ambiguous sexuality, performance, and space age moxie which rock is still using a goal post for popular culture. Few realize that the character of Ziggy was actually based on an obscure rock and roll singer Vince Taylor.  Modelling his singing and style after early Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent, Vince Taylor took the UK by storm.  By the mid sixties Vince grew erratic and his performances would have references to UFO's, aliens, and whatever passions consumed Vince.  He committed career suicide by declaring ...

David Brown and Obscura Obscura by David Brown On this edition of Spandex and Monster, we meet comic book writer David Brown and his unique comic book collection Obscura.  From all appearances it looks pretty cool, and I thought I would share it with everyone in Spandex and Monster. Who are you and what do you do to the man on the street?   My name is David M. Brown. I'm head writer and EIC of Fifth Dimension Comics. We make comics other people are afraid to make. Picture the weirdness of Twin Peaks mixed with your favorite horror movie in comic form...that's what we do. David M. Brown What brought you into comics?   I've been into comics since I was a kid. The first book I ever picked up was an issue of 'The Punisher'. I was an odd little kid and I think I was drawn to that big white skull. He's still my favorite comic character! Comics, to me, are simply the best way to present stories. Both visual and mental simultaneously. There is not...
