Chung ling Soo and the bullet catch trick gone wrong

Magic and danger Chung ling Soo's bullet catch illusion Chung ling Soo and the bullet catch trick gone wrong At the recent Ken Daniels's Fright Night Film Festival weekend in Louisville, I was talking to the charming actress/filmmaker Megan Lynette Hunt and I mentioned at the end of the day we are all magicians. From filmmakers, writers, painters, musicians, and all arts in one shape or another we are magicians.  As a former elementary school magician, the magic was pulling over the reality of something miraculous (restore a cut rope, find a coin out of the air, etc) despite people's skepticism and knowledge there was a 'trick' involved somehow.  If you were a successful magician, you presented an illusion that both shocked and involved the audience. That bending of reality and illusion is a hallmark of fantastic magicians like Chung ling Soo, who at the early 1900's England was packing theaters with his traditional Chinese magic.  It was said,

Space Patrol and Astro Space Hero

Space heroes Buzz Cory and Space Cadet Happy in the television show 'Space Patrol' Space Patrol  Space Patrol originally was created for television as a daily show for children in 1950 from L.A. with a running time of 15 minutes.  This format proved popular, and after being picked up by ABC, some 900 episodes were cranked out.  The episode length then expanded to 30 minutes.  For the remaining 210 episodes this was the format length before the series ended in 1955.  Space Patrol was a popular spin off in radio, comics, and merchandise connected to the show. A cast photo of Space Patrol The show was created by Williams 'Mike' Moser who wanted to bring the excitement of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers cinema of his youth to children of the 1950's.  Production of the show was very primitive compared to modern standards.  All of the shows were performed 'live', and if there was a mistake the cast would keep going on as if they were performing a play.

The Flesh Eaters with a big lovecraftian monster with a Nazi connection The Flesh Eaters (1964) A black and white low budget thriller that was shot mostly around Montauk, NewYork.  It's gruesome death scenes done by crude special effects make it one of the first gore films.  With a cult following, this film influenced other gore films later.  A drunken over the hill starlet hires a pilot to take her and her assistant on a trip, only to be forced by the weather on a secluded island.  Strange skeletons of fish and a person appear on the desolate beaches.  They are met by a reclusive scientist who claims he is working on a science experiment.  Soon it is revealed that he is a Nazi scientist is conducting experiments on creatures that can devour flesh quickly. The girl who gets semi nude and dies and the beginning for modern slasher horror films...it starts here. Predating the slasher films by decades, we are introduced to characters such as the beatnik who are one dim

The real Ziggy Stardust

Image
Ziggy Stardust which was inspired by the rise and fall of Vince Taylor   The real Ziggy Stardust David Bowie's classic album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars introduced the world to glam rock and brought the struggling musician David Bowie to the world.  This album has many classic songs which still resonate with pop culture and the youth of today, even though it was released in the early seventies.  A potent brew of songs, ambiguous sexuality, performance, and space age moxie which rock is still using a goal post for popular culture. Few realize that the character of Ziggy was actually based on an obscure rock and roll singer Vince Taylor.  Modelling his singing and style after early Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent, Vince Taylor took the UK by storm.  By the mid sixties Vince grew erratic and his performances would have references to UFO's, aliens, and whatever passions consumed Vince.  He committed career suicide by declaring he was Jesus Christ w

David Brown and Obscura

Image
David Brown and Obscura Obscura by David Brown On this edition of Spandex and Monster, we meet comic book writer David Brown and his unique comic book collection Obscura.  From all appearances it looks pretty cool, and I thought I would share it with everyone in Spandex and Monster. Who are you and what do you do to the man on the street?   My name is David M. Brown. I'm head writer and EIC of Fifth Dimension Comics. We make comics other people are afraid to make. Picture the weirdness of Twin Peaks mixed with your favorite horror movie in comic form...that's what we do. David M. Brown What brought you into comics?   I've been into comics since I was a kid. The first book I ever picked up was an issue of 'The Punisher'. I was an odd little kid and I think I was drawn to that big white skull. He's still my favorite comic character! Comics, to me, are simply the best way to present stories. Both visual and mental simultaneously. There is not

Eric Adams and Lackluster world

Eric Adams and Lackluster world Comic book artist Eric Adams and Lackluster World at the Kentucky Cosplay and Comiccon At the recent Kentucky Cosplay and Comiccon, I ran into this comic book creator from the wild untamed lands of Cincinnati.  I checked out his work in Lackluster world, a cool comic worth the effort to get yourself a copy (links below).  As a former Cincinnati resident I was horrified to hear Eric tell me that the ghetto of my youth where I was a security guard for one day at a crappy temp agency has now been transformed into a hipster paradise...over the rhine I'll still remember you for the blight and urban decay you were known for in Cincinnati! Lackluster world at Kentucky Cosplay and Comicon Eric was very nice, and patient with me when I was comic book geeking out on him.  What can I say?  Every filmmaker has a secret or not so secret desire to work in comic books.  Films and comic books have same methods in different mediums, but that story is f
