Choose the force
Choose the force
I finally caught Rogue One, and enjoyed the stand alone Star Wars film. One of the most interesting characters was the force sensitive monk warrior Chirrut Imwe (played by international action star Donnie Yen). His mantra was 'I am one with the force. The force is with me' which is a nod to the original concept of the force from the original trilogy. The force was in concept a binding energy created by all living things, and this awesome power could be used for good or evil.
The idea of the force, and the avatars of that force (the good jedi versus the evil sith) resonated with cinema audiences of the 1970's. After the Vietnam conflict, and the scandal of Watergate the concept of the force and Jedi knights became a new pop mythology. With roots in other religions, and concepts of Zen to warrior poets of olden times, the force suddenly crossed over from a nebulous concept to a potent thing in pop culture. As with all things in pop culture, it grew more complex and established with every new cultural and fandom feedback.
Just as slenderman as a fictional character soon became slenderman a true paranormal happening via tulpa concept affecting the universe, perhaps the force will one day have become a real concept and religion (several countries now consider Jedi to be a religion).
Whenever that day arrives, hopefully we will choose the right path of the force.
