Eric Adams and Lackluster world

At the recent Kentucky Cosplay and Comiccon, I ran into this comic book creator from the wild untamed lands of Cincinnati.  I checked out his work in Lackluster world, a cool comic worth the effort to get yourself a copy (links below).  As a former Cincinnati resident I was horrified to hear Eric tell me that the ghetto of my youth where I was a security guard for one day at a crappy temp agency has now been transformed into a hipster paradise...over the rhine I'll still remember you for the blight and urban decay you were known for in Cincinnati!

Eric was very nice, and patient with me when I was comic book geeking out on him.  What can I say?  Every filmmaker has a secret or not so secret desire to work in comic books.  Films and comic books have same methods in different mediums, but that story is for another day.

Eric Adams was kind enough to do an interview with Spandex and Monster.  So without further ado, here is Eric Adams of Lackluster world.

Who are you, and what it is that you do to the average guy on the street?

Eric Adams! I'm best known as the creator of the comic book series, LACKLUSTER WORLD. Recently, I launched NARRIER, a publishing and distribution company focused on post-genre entertainment. Through Narrier, I recently released three new comic titles: PECKING ORDER, GOODBYE WEATHER and RUMSPRINGA! AN AMISHPUNK YARN. I've been writing, illustrating and publishing my own comics for 10 years now.

What drew you into the realm of comic books?

I didn't really discover comics until I was in my early 20s. At the time, I was becoming very interested in movies and seriously considered going to film school. Until then, I was, of course, aware of comics, but only knew them as a superhero thing. Thankfully, some friends showed me indie comics and it opened my eyes. It was a great way for me to do the visual storytelling I was interested in without having to learn the ins and outs of filmmaking. I could write and draw, so I just jumped in and haven't looked back. I still expect I'll make a film some day soon though.

How did Lackluster world come about?

LACKLUSTER WORLD was just a weird collection of story ideas that just fit together. It's about an albino man using vandalism and journalism to manipulate his world all while trying to evade his fanatically religious siblings. Tonally, I call it FIGHT CLUB meets OFFICE SPACE in PLEASANTVILLE. It's a story that just kind of happened. I suffered through Catholic school and had spent a few years unhappily working in business/advertising, and overall had a lot of angst about society. LACKLUSTER WORLD is my purging of all those frustrations into a weird, funny story.

I understand there is a kickstarter project going on, if someone is interesting in finding out about and/or funding this kickstarter where would they go?
Yes! LACKLUSTER WORLD was a 7 issue comic series that took 8 years to complete. I'm currently running a Kickstarter campaign to collect the series into a 380-page hardcover "Director's Cut" version of the comics.
