Night of the Fools

Night of the Fools

One of my favorite films of all time is the iconic Plan 9 from Outer Space.  I also get a big kick out of filmmakers who explore or use that theme in their films.  One of my favorites is the strange film 'Night of the Fools' by director Ace Fronton.  Really awkward and inept film making on all fronts which means in a weird sort of way, a perfect friend to the Ed Wood collection.  Night of the fools is an homage to the ed wood gang as they meet over dinner, drink themselves into a stupor and Ed Wood wanders off into the woods along to meet aliens and his future destiny as the world's worst filmmaker.

The film looks like it was put together by a small town theater company with no money for props, costumes, or any production values.  Large master shots with the actors awkwardly delivering their lines.  The average film fan probably won't love this film, but for us fans of 'so bad its good' cinema, definitely worth a look.  'Lugosi' pops out off a cardboard coffin, and Tor Johnson is a small man with a halloween express bald prop...so bizarre yet perfect for the Ed Wood gang.  It feels like it was shot on cheap VHS camcorder to complete the trifecta of weird.

The director knows Ed's story, and did his own spin on the creation of 'Plan 9 from Outer Space'

Soul Robbers from Outer Space

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my plan 9 inspired film, Soul Robbers from Outer Space.  It's a crazy sci fi comedy with one of the original Plan 9 actors Conrad Brooks in it as the narrator and reprising his role as 'Jessup' from my clown slasher film Purvos.  Worth a look for Ed Wood and Conrad Brooks fans.
