"The Flying Man" superhero horror film hybrid

Image
"The Flying Man" superhero horror film hybrid 'The Flying Man' by Marcus Alqueres Superheroes in society have been deconstructed since the 80's with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore's iconic, The Watchmen.  Troubling questions pop up when a creature with fantastic power has a loose or murky moral center is dispensing 'justice' in society.  Taken away from the moralistic eras of the past, a superhero in modern times could be considered a horror element to contemporary audiences. What if an alien with fantastic powers showed up and silently dispensed justice with no remorse?  The moral murkiness of 'might makes right' which is now a part of the contemporary super hero tale in comic books.  It was only a matter of time that the this moral murkiness could lead into a superhero/horror which is the subject of the short film by special effects artist Marcus Alqueres called 'The Flying Man' Boasting cool sp...

Monster a go go

Image
Monster a go go Monster a-go go Monster a go go is a strange film with a strange history.  Pioneer indie filmmaker and gore guru, Herschell Gordon Lewis acquired a partially finished film from Bill Rebane and finished it so he could have a double bill film to show theaters.  In that era of film distribution, you increased your chance of actually getting paid by theater owners if both films were under your name.  The film concerns an astronaut struck by mysterious radiation.  Since Lewis was filming scenes years after the partially finished film, one actor played his previous character's 'brother' as well as the iconic droning narration(in our era of high end sound equipment and EFX would not be a problem, but in the earlier era of indies, you could cover huge gaps in sound by music and/or narration). 10 foot tall monster astronaut from a tiny cardboard capsule!   The film is very disjointed in structure, and the ending is somewhat off kilter....

Night of the Fools

Image
Night of the Fools Night of the Fools One of my favorite films of all time is the iconic Plan 9 from Outer Space.  I also get a big kick out of filmmakers who explore or use that theme in their films.  One of my favorites is the strange film 'Night of the Fools' by director Ace Fronton.  Really awkward and inept film making on all fronts which means in a weird sort of way, a perfect friend to the Ed Wood collection.  Night of the fools is an homage to the ed wood gang as they meet over dinner, drink themselves into a stupor and Ed Wood wanders off into the woods along to meet aliens and his future destiny as the world's worst filmmaker. The film looks like it was put together by a small town theater company with no money for props, costumes, or any production values.  Large master shots with the actors awkwardly delivering their lines.  The average film fan probably won't love this film, but for us fans of 'so bad its good' cinema, definitel...

Elvis and his UFO connection

Image
Elvis and his UFO connection Elvis and his UFO connection Long a pop culture joke of Elvis connected to UFO's in song and lore, it turns out that Elvis actually does have a strong UFO connection.  Although raised as an only child, Elvis's twin was stillborn 30 minutes before he was delivered.   That event haunted Elvis, and led to the King of rock and roll having an extensive collection of paranormal, occult, and UFO books  which traveled with the King wherever he went, much to the chagrin of Col Tom Parker.  A well circulated story was Elvis met strange aliens when he was a boy and showed him a man in a white suit which sounds like the iconic white jump suit of legend. If aliens and 'UFO's' are manifestations of the ultraterrestrials ala John Keel, it would make sense that they would have a vested interest in Elvis Presley.   His embrace of black music, and shocking sexual innuendo would light the fuse for rock and roll, racial culture awareness, poli...

Richard Elfman's Forbidden Zone

Image
Richard Elfman's Forbidden Zone Forbidden Zone with music by the mystic knights of the oingo boingo If I was going to name the film that influenced all of my films, I'd probably give this film as one of the most influential on what I did with films.  Richard Elfman started his street theater group 'The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo' in the early 70's after doing a stint in Jean Savary avant garde theatre troupe in France.  Essentially the mystic knights would do crazy max fleischer type of cartoon raunchy burlesque live action theater with old Cab Calloway standards and originals performed by Richard's younger brother Danny Elfman.  They played theater venues and eventally doing a stint on the gong show.  Danny Elfman was pulling the mystic knights to drop the theatrical elements and go more for a punk vibe ala XTC.   Eventually the Mystic Knights became the pop punk band Oingo Boingo which led to a successful scoring career for Danny Elfman (Ba...

Kimberly Kane as Wonder woman

Image
Kimberly Kane as Wonder woman Kimberly Kane as Wonder woman With the successful reboot of superman with Man of Steel, more and more folks are quietly hoping for a possible justice league film or even a reboot of Wonder woman.  Outside of the iconic 70's tv show, Wonder woman has had problems being adapted to screen.  To underscore this, just look at the adult parody of wonder woman with adult film star Kimberly Kane and compare it to Adrianne Palicki's wonder woman in the unsold pilot by David Kelly.  Kimberly Kane looks very much like Wonder Woman if it was a big budget screen adaption, whereas Adrianne Palicki looks like she got costumed at the local halloween express.  It points to the problem of rebooting the amazon princess to the big screen.  Few movie studios are willing to invest in a big budget Wonder Woman reboot. Adrianne Palicki's wonder woman Quietly adult entertainment has exploded with its fairly faithful adaptions of comic b...

Orgy of the Dead

Image
Orgy of the Dead Horror writer Bob and his girlfriend Shirley endure monsters and burlesque dancers in Orgy of the Dead While not officially directed by cult filmmaker Ed Wood, this strange film has enough 'woodisms' to be part of his unique cinema canon.  Veteran nudie filmmaker A.C. Stephens asked Ed Wood to provide the screenplay (which originally was 20 pages with the rest of the time to be filled with horror themed nudie dancers).  Shirley is horrified by the monsters / nudie girls of Criswell!   Up and coming cult actress Pat Barringer did a dual role as Shirley and as the haunted gold girl dancer.  Rounding out the cast was Ed Wood actor/friend/psychic Criswell as the lord of undead.  Actress Fawn Silver in her only role played a character very much inspired by Vampira. one of the original promo bills for the film...just what is 'astravision' anyways? For erotica, it's pretty bad and boring.  The nudity and music pack as much hea...

The strange saga of marvel man

Image
The strange saga of Marvel man marvelman comic Created out a need for a hero when the British reprint publisher ran into problems when the popular Captain Marvel character was being forced out of business by DC's lawsuits claiming Captain Marvel was a rip off of the popular Superman.  Marvel man was a cosmetic revamp of Captain Marvel, with his nemesis being Gargunza as opposed to Dr. Sivana.  Artist Mick Anglo created Marvel Man for publisher L. Miller and son in 1954. comic book writer / occultist Alan Moore Marvel man ran its course before folding up in the early sixties.  Later, the character was revamped by occultist/writer Alan Moore (which due to copyright issues was dubbed Miracle man).  Moore explored the dark side of heroes, and the blurry line of gods among us.  While more well known for the Watchmen and the Killing Joke, some contend that Alan Moore hit all the right notes of superhero subversion with Miracle Man.  Future San...

Nikola Tesla, scientist or warlock?

Image
energy from a tesla coil Few deny the technology that maverick scientist Nikola Tesla brought to the masses.  His alternating current is now the standard of energy around the world, and his inventions run the line from particle weapons to wireless energy transmission.  While rival Thomas Edison acquired the title 'wizard of menelo park' could Tesla actually make a claim to the title of wizard? maverick scientist Tesla Tesla was afflicted by a strange illness where he could see something in his mind as a three dimensional object such as design for his tesla coils and make it run in his mind and watch it work in real time.  This strange malady has more in common with virtual reality or the concept of visualize magic where you visual something and thereby by ritual of spells materialize some form of magic or creature (noted UFO researcher John Keel argued that visitations and bigfoot had more in common with elemental summoning than a prehistoric man). Tesla die...

Superman IV, the Quest for Peace

Image
Superman IV, the Quest for Peace With the promo ramp up on 'Man of Steel' in full swing, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the nadir of the last son of Krypton, Superman IV, The Quest for Peace.  The film actually works on a 50's live action cartoon movie if one views it in that context, but fails utterly when compared to the iconic Superman movie from 1978  with Christoper Reeve, Marlon Brando, and Margo Kidder.  Superman IV, the Quest for Peace was made during a high stakes corporate take over of the superman series, Superman IV suffered post productions woes and lack of studio push for the film.  The slashing of the budget of this Superman film is apparent with the weak visual effects and lackluster story line. Luthor's plan of nuclear war for profit is foiled by Superman In a nutshell, Superman has decided to rid the world of nuclear war, and is now throwing ICBMs into the sun after addressing the United Nations.  Enter Lex Luthor ...

The Monkey man of Delhi

Image
The Monkey man of Delhi Monkey man of Delhi   In May of 2001, reports of a strange monster surfaced in India.  By most accounts, it was a biped monkey man with a metal helmet, claws, glowing red eyes, and a chest with some device that had lights on it.  Panic swept the country as hysteria gripped the population.  People were trampled and some reports of deaths from frightened folks escaping this monster.  Some claimed it was a botched science experiment, and others claimed it was mass hysteria.  Yet the question remains, what was the monkey man monster in India? I'm hazarding a guess this is a manifestation of 'ultraterrestrial' energy into a monster concept from maverick UFO investigator John Keel.  It was a concept he most famously connected to the mothman sightings out of point pleasant, and it was Keel thoughts to describe things such as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster.  Essentially the 'monster' winks into our universe from other dimensions ...

Ellie Church, The Impersonators, The Red Cricket, and Monsters of the UFO

Image
ELLIE CHURCH In this episode of Spandex and Monster, we visit model/actress Ellie Church.  She's making quite an impression with her roles in indie films, and her offbeat model images.  Recently, she has been in a comedy about superhero impersonators, which looks like heaven for fans of spandex and monster. promo poster for 'Farmer's Daughters' Ellie in the film, And then YOU die Ellie, please introduce yourself, tell us what you do. Hi! I'm Ellie Church, I am an actress , (and have done a bit of modeling ) I got my start working conventions for Troma. I was talking with Lloyd while doing a convention in Indianapolis and he told me I should try my hand at acting. Honestly , it was something I had always been interested in but, I didn't really think that was something that was 'accessible ' to me but with the recent pop in independent film, unbeknownst to me , it was , and it took off from there. I got my first gig in a do...
